Main focus
I don’t find one main focus in Romans but several: the human condition, the good news, the new life, the Jews, and the practical side of the gospel. After Paul´s greetings in the first chapter the first main point in Romans is the great need of universal righteousness. That is both for Gentiles and Jews(1:18-3:20). The second main point in the letter is the answer for the great need of righteousness: righteousness by faith in Christ Jesus(3:21-5:21) The third main point Paul makes has to do with the new life (6:1-8:39). In this chapter Paul talks about sin, death and the law. Paul´s main solution concerning sin, death and the law is to actively live in the new life we have through the Spirit. Paul´s fourth main point in Romans is about Israel. Paul asks questions and then answers them rhetorical. Is God just? ; Why did they reject Christ? ; has God now rejected Israel? ; did they stumble so they would fall? And then in the end of chapter 10 Paul gives a word against boasting (9:1-10:21:). The fifth main section contains practical exhortations for Christian living, commands to obey governmental authorities, and an ethic of love and respect for differences. (Rom 12:1-14)
